Left Handed Schecter Guitars 2022 – A Huge Lefty Range

Schecter Guitar Research is one of the most lefty-friendly guitar companies around. The question isn’t “Do Schecter make left handed guitars?”; rather “How many left handed Schecter guitars are there?”

You’d be surprised when comparing them to most other guitar companies!

Schecter has become one of the top guitar companies in the world, with many famous musicians and bands using their instruments, including Avenged Sevenfold, Disturbed, Zakk Wylde, and Cage the Elephant.

Lefty guitarists and bassists who play Schecter include dUg Pinnick (Kings X), Ernie C (Body Count), Miles Dimitri Baker (Interloper), Steve Mandarano (The One Arm Bandit), Tobias Young (Our Hollow Our Home), Tori Ruffin (Morris Day and The Time), and Zacky Vengeance (Avenged Sevenfold).

Schecter is also the worldwide distributor of Zakk Wylde‘s Wylde Audio brand of guitars.

Who is Schecter Guitar Research?

Like a number of other guitar companies, such as Charvel/Jackson, ESP, and Manson Guitar Works, Schecter Guitar Research was born from its early days as a guitar repair shop.

It was founded by David Schecter in 1976 in Van Nuys, California, making high-quality replacement guitar necks and bodies and various other guitar parts such as bridges, potentiometers, pickup assemblies, etc., that allowed customers to soup up their guitars.

They later began supplying parts to notable guitar companies, and by 1979, Schecter started to offer their own high-quality fully assembled hot-rodded electric guitars in very limited quantities.

By 1983, Schecter’s custom shop couldn’t keep up with demand for these high-quality instruments, so the company moved to Dallas, Texas after it was sold to a group of Texas investors wanting to build on Schecter’s reputation.

Schecter then introduced a number of new guitars and basses, including what later became known as the Saturn, a T-style guitar that was unofficially dubbed the “Pete Townshend model”, which he never actually endorsed. At this time, Schecter also introduced an S-style guitar which was later known as the Mercury.

For these guitars, Schecter was using Fender Telecaster and Stratocaster necks, which they used during the repair shop days, and by 1985, CBS, who owned Fender at the time, took legal action against Schecter, as well as Tokai, and ESP seeking injunctions to stop the alleged copying of their guitars.

Also at this point, Swedish guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen began endorsing Schecter guitars, having several custom models featuring scalloped necks and reverse headstocks.

In 1987, Schecter was sold to current owner Hisatake Shibuya, a Japanese businessman who also founded ESP Guitars, who relocated the company back to California, where the company returned to its roots making high-end, expensive custom instruments.

By 1996, Michael Ciravolo, who worked at Shibuya’s retail store Sunset Custom Guitars, was promoted to president of Schecter Guitar Research. Ciravolo was a well-connected musician and was able to add a number of well-known guitarists and bassists to Schecter’s artist roster, including Robert DeLeo (Bass – Stone Temple Pilots), and Jay Noel Yuenger and Sean Yseult (Guitarist and Bassist of White Zombie respectively).

He also led Schecter away from the more traditional Fender type of guitars and wanted to move towards designs that would cater to the next generation of musicians, playing more modern styles of music.

To do this, Ciravolo decided to take the company into mass-production, while keeping quality high and sourced a factory in South Korea to build their instruments. Schecter’s guitars would be made in Korea and then sent to the US to be set up by Schecter.

Schecter’s custom shop was expanded in 2012, followed by the company announcing a new line of USA-built guitars, bringing the company back to its roots. Along with this “USA Production Series”, Schecter also announced that they would be entering the amplification market with amplifier designer James Brown on board. Brown had helped Eddie Van Halen to design his famed Peavey 5150 amp.

Schecter’s range of amps was split into two series; the USA series (built in Schecter’s USA custom shop) and the Stage series, which were built overseas.

Nowadays, Schecter offers a massive range of guitars, geared towards today’s modern players who require great performance from their instruments, and even though Schecter’s lefty range is just a fraction of this number, we still get a huge choice compared to other guitar companies’ offerings.

What Do I Think of Schecter Guitars?

The very fact that Schecter offers such a large range of cool-looking and well-specced lefty models, makes them one of my favorite guitar companies.

Couple that with guitar players and bands that I like also using Schecter guitars, including Al Jourgensen (Ministry), Dean Pleasants (Suicidal Tendencies), Derek Smalls (Spinal Tap), Synyster Gates (Avenged Sevenfold), Travis Johnson (In This Moment) and Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society, Ozzy Osbourne).

Left Handed Schecter Acoustic Guitars

Although there are eleven Schecter acoustic guitars available to our right handed friends, there are no left handed Schecter acoustic guitars available at the time of writing.

Final Thoughts

Wow! I’ve gotta say, Schecter may well be the most generous guitar company when it comes to the sheer number of left handed guitars. A massive eighty-four left handed Schecter guitars at the time of writing, and that’s just the electric guitars! Don’t forget the huge collection of thirty-nine lefty bass guitars at the time of writing!

When it comes to acoustic guitars, only Taylor and C.F. Martin & Co. can match Schecter. Similarly, they both also have a large number available as lefty versions.

In terms of electric guitars, only Gibson, Fender, and ESP come close, and even they aren’t all that close.

The only slight gripe about Schecter’s lefty range is that many of the colors aren’t available, so many of their left handed range look quite similar.

This is partly due to many of the guitars being variations of the same guitar. Take the Hellraiser “C-Series” guitars for example.

There’s the C-1; then there’s a C-1 with a Floyd Rose, and then there’s a C-1 with a Floyd Rose and a Sustainiac pickup. After that comes the C-7; a 7-string version, which also has a model with a Floyd Rose, and another with the Floyd Rose and Sustainiac.

There’s also a C-8 (eight strings), and the C-VI Baritone model. All eight models are very similar and come in the same color/finish.

It’d be nice if Schecter could offer at least a couple of acoustic models to us lefty guitarists. They shouldn’t be too difficult to make, especially those symmetrical acoustics with no cutaway. Let’s hope for some in the future!
