After reviewing my lefty Vintage Black ESP LTD EC-1000 Deluxe, I thought I’d take a look at the company that made it – ESP, and what left handed ESP guitars and basses are available for you, my lefty friends, to buy.

So, does ESP make left handed guitars?

Yes, they do! ESP is one of the more generous guitar companies when it comes to catering to left handed players and produces a decent range of their most popular designs.

Who Are ESP Guitars?

ESP is currently one of the top manufacturers of guitars and basses and is favored primarily by players of heavy rock and metal.

ESP was founded in 1975, when a shop called Electric Sound Products was opened in Tokyo, Japan, by a man named Hisatake Shibuya. In his shop, he sold custom replacement guitar parts, and soon later started making and selling guitars under the ESP brand in Japan. Shibuya is also the owner of Schecter Guitar Research.

It was in the ’80s that they made a name for themselves when many American metal guitarists started playing ESP guitars. These included guitarists from bands including the “Big 4” of thrash metal; Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax.

These and many other hard rock/heavy metal guitarists cemented ESP’s name as one of the leading Metal guitar manufacturers.

Today, ESP endorses a huge number of professional guitarists, and has grown that user base to almost 800 endorsed artists!

The Different Types of ESP Guitars

ESP says on their website:

“12% of the world is left-handed. So, with a current population of 7.7 billion people, something like 924 million of you are southpaws, and ESP wants you to know that we care about you.“

And take care of us they do! They are one of the most lefty-friendly guitar companies around and cater to all levels of guitarists. They have five tiers of production lines, each of which represents a different level of quality:

• LTD – This range was introduced in 1996 by ESP so that they could offer guitars of the quality and prestige that ESP had come to produce at various affordable price points so that all guitar players could get in on the action. These guitars include models ranging from those suitable for beginners to guitars that are designed with the serious professional in mind.
• ESP E-II – The premium E-II Series guitars, previously known as ESP Standard, are mass-produced at the ESP Custom Shop in Tokyo, Japan, by ESP’s expert luthiers. They are designed for professional players who want high-performance guitars that are both reliable and second-to-none when it comes to tone and feel.
• ESP USA – A step up from the E-II Series, which are handcrafted in North Hollywood, California, bringing ESP’s tradition of guitar building excellence to the USA. It’s the only place outside of Japan allowed to use the ESP logo on the headstock. Customers can configure their guitar online, choosing from various top woods, colors, finishes, pickups, and hardware colors, ready to be made for them later. At the time of writing, left handed ESP USA options include the Eclipse, Horizon-II, M-I NTB FR, M-II NTB FR, M-I NTB NT, and M-II NTB NT models.
• ESP Original Series – ESP’s highest-quality production guitars and basses. These guitars are hand-made one at a time by the master luthiers at ESP’s Custom Shop in Tokyo, Japan. They are of the highest level of detail and craftsmanship, using the finest woods and components; some featuring beautifully textured, iridescent, or metallic finishes.
• ESP Custom Shop – The ultimate ESP guitars! Handmade to the most sublime level of quality, which ESP describes as:
  

  “anything from a personalized version of an existing ESP model, or a completely new and totally unique instrument that represents the guitar or bass of your dreams.“

Also available are the ESP/LTD Signature Series guitars, which are co-designed by ESP and their “elite family of artists“. These are built to the exact specifications of each artist and are of the same highest quality that has come to be expected of ESP. You can take a look at the current range here.

Why Do I Like the ESP Guitar Company?

Simple answer really; the obvious reason is that they make some fantastic guitars! The guitars they make look great and have some really cool specs. Their ESP LTD range offers an amazing quality to cost ratio, the LTD 1000 series are pro-level guitars that don’t cost the earth to buy (although some can still be quite pricey).

They have a huge range of guitars available, from the fantastic value of the LTD range to the hand-crafted top-of-the-line custom shop models, and the great news for us lefties is that there is a pretty sizeable range of left handed ESP guitars for us too! ESP is known to offer lefty guitarists and bassists a wide variety of instruments.

ESP KH Demonology LH

The ESP KH Demonology LH is a signature model of Kirk Hammett (Metallica). Its black finish features various ancient symbols, said to allow its owner to summon demonic forces with its magic power!

It comes with a set of active EMG 60 (neck) and EMG 81 (bridge) pickups, a Floyd Rose Original tremolo, a fingerboard with Kirk’s Skull & Crossbones inlays, and 24 extra jumbo frets (scalloped from 17-24). It also comes in a special Tombstone hardshell case.

LTD KH-3 Spider LH

The KH-3 Spider was played by Kirk Hammett throughout the ’90s while touring Metallica‘s now-legendary Black Album.

In 1991, Hammett asked ESP for a new guitar with a single-cutaway, but with the features of his KH-2 guitar. The unique spider graphic design was specially designed by Metallica’s own graphic artist Pushead. The original KH-3 was on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of fame for a number of years, and has now returned to ESP to be referenced for this 30th Anniversary edition.

So there you have it! The current range of left handed ESP guitars and basses; it’s a fantastic selection with some really nice looking finishes. I’d love to get the LTD Metallic Gold M-1 Custom ’87 LH!

It’s a shame that there are no new ESP, E-II, or LTD models available in left handed versions so far in 2023. Still, there are plenty of last years range; if you’ve got the cash and feeling flash, then why not go for one of these higher-tiered lefty guitar lines.

Also, no new lefty basses either so far…
