After reviewing the lefty Gibson Les Paul Studio, I thought I should have a look at the company that makes them and what left handed Gibson guitars are available.
Gibson guitars are one of the most iconic and famous guitar brands out there. Steeped in rock history, Gibson is a guitar brand that so many famous guitar players have been associated with.
Tony Iommi, Jimi Hendrix, Albert King, Otis Rush, Jimmy Page, Slash, and Angus Young are just a few of them, but the list of artists is ridiculously long!
Gibson also owns the Epiphone guitar brand.

Who Are Gibson Guitars?

If you play guitar, it’s unlikely that you’ve never heard of Gibson guitars, but if you know nothing about them, here’s a brief history.
The Gibson Guitar Corporation was founded by Orville Gibson in 1902 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. At this time, his company was originally called the Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Mfg. Co. Ltd. producing Orville Gibson’s original designs.
Unfortunately, Orville Gibson spent several extended periods in hospital and died in 1918, aged 62, of chronic endocarditis.
The Gibson company went on to invent the Archtop guitar, and also began to produce flattop acoustic guitars and hollow-bodied electric guitars.
Gibson was then purchased by Chicago Musical Instruments in 1944, and four years later, the company hired Ted McCarty, who later became Gibson’s President in 1950.
McCarty also famously went on to become Paul Reed Smith‘s mentor, founder of PRS Guitars.
Chicago Musical Instruments was acquired by Norlin Corporation in 1969, so ownership shifted to them until 1986 when the company almost went out of business. Norlin Corporation was then acquired by Henry E. Juszkiewicz, David H. Berryman, and Gary A. Zebrowski.
Some saw this time as a decline in quality, blaming the company’s higher-ups for pursuing financial success over the quality of their products.
In 2013, the company was renamed Gibson Brands, Inc., after various partnerships with and acquisitions of audio technology companies. However, by 2018, the company filed for bankruptcy.
Later that year, Gibson formed a plan to reorganize and restructure to focus on its core business of selling guitars and closing down its Gibson Innovations division which sold audio equipment outside of the USA.

Henry Juszkiewicz also stepped down as CEO, and the following month James “JC” Curleigh was appointed new President and CEO of the company. Curleigh himself is a guitar player, and many believe that Gibson seems to be addressing the issues that contributed to Gibson’s decline under Juszkiewicz’s presidency.
In May 2023, it was announced that Gibson’s Board of Directors was to appoint Cesar Gueikian as President, and Interim CEO of Gibson. Gueikian was formerly Gibson’s Brand President.
What Do I Think of Gibson Guitars?
Gibson is one of those brands that I’d heard of very early on when learning to play guitar. You can’t help it really, if you’re into certain bands and you like certain guitarists, then you’re bound to find out what guitars they play, and back in the day, many of my fave players played Gibsons.
Back then, I liked guitarists like Jimmy Page, Angus Young, Slash, Gary Moore, B.B.King, and Tony Iommi; all well known for playing Gibson guitars.
I also liked Jimi Hendrix and seeing him playing a Flying V, was an image that stuck in my mind, as he was better known for playing Fender Stratocasters.
Ever since those early days of learning to play guitar, I’ve been a fan of Gibson and the guitars they produce.

Are All Gibson Guitars Made in the USA?
Gibson is famed for making all of its guitars in the USA across two different locations. Their solid-body guitars, such as the Les Paul and SG models are made at their Nashville, Tennessee factory, which opened in 1974.
From 2000, Gibson built their semi-hollow and hollow-body guitars in Memphis, Tennessee, but moved their production to the Nashville factory in 2018.
Gibson’s acoustic guitars are made at a separate factory in Bozeman, Montana.
Epiphone Guitars, owned by Gibson, are generally made in China.
Left Handed Gibson Electric Guitars
At the time of writing, there are twenty-one solid-body and three semi-acoustic left handed Gibson guitars. There’s also one left handed Gibson bass guitar available.

Final Thoughts
At the time of writing, there are a massive 24 left handed Gibson guitars!
That’s a pretty generous offering from one of the most iconic guitar brands in the history of guitars. I think it’s great that we lefties are able to have a good choice of left handed Gibson guitars and a decent number of finishes and colors.
Of course, plenty of gorgeous guitars are unavailable in lefty configuration, but Gibson has treated left handed guitarists with a fantastic range of guitars.
With so many lefty Gibson guitars available, it’s a shame that there aren’t many bass guitars available; just the one.
However, there are only three Gibson bass guitars available to our right handed friends, so I guess we haven’t done too badly.
What do you think about Gibson guitars? Have they improved in quality in recent years? Let us know in the comments below.

Gibson makes a short scale (30.5″) bass guitar in a left handed version, in “Worn Cherry” color: https://www.gibson.com/Guitar/USACYC512/Les-Paul-Junior-Tribute-DC-Bass/Worn-Cherry
How did I miss that?! Thanks, I’ve updated with the Les Paul Junior Tribute DC Bass.
