Does Cort Make Left Handed Guitars?

Yes, they do! At the time of writing, there are two left handed Cort electric guitars, six left handed Cort acoustic guitars, and one left handed Cort bass.

Well known artists who’ve used Cort instruments include Ron ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal (Sons of Apollo, Guns N’ Roses, Asia), Yvette Young (Covet), T.M. Stevens (Vai, The Pretenders), Gene Simmons (KISS), and Frank Gambale.

Who Are Cort Guitars?

Various stages of making guitars at the Cortek factory in South Korea.

Korean company Cort started out in 1960 as a company called SooDo Piano and was founded by Jung-gyu Park. By 1972, recession forced the company to close, only to open again the following year as a guitar manufacturer in cooperation with Jack Westheimer, who had been a major buyer at SooDo Piano.

At this point, the company was an OEM manufacturer for other brands, with around fifty employees building around three thousand guitars per month. The company now makes more than a million guitars annually!

Jung-gyu Park’s son, 26-year-old Young H. Park, started working for the company at this time, where he began learning the various manufacturing processes and management systems required to run the company.

The company changed its name to Cort Musical Instrument Corp. and by 1982 started its own brand of guitars. The OEM part of the company eventually changed its name to Cor-Tek, while their guitars retained the Cort brand name to avoid confusion with their manufacturer customers.

Over the years, Cor-Tek has been an OEM guitar manufacturer to many American, European, and Japanese companies, and currently makes guitars for more than twenty guitar manufacturers.

They’ve made guitars for many guitar brands including Epiphone, ESP, Fender, G&L, Guild, Hohner, Ibanez, Jackson, Kramer, Musicman, PRS, Schecter, Squier, Steinberger, Tanglewood, and Washburn, among others.

The Cort brand is a department of Cor-Tek just like all of their other manufacturer customers. Cort aims to produce good quality instruments at reasonable prices, providing value to their customers.

Cor-Tek now has manufacturing facilities in Korea, China, and Indonesia, and its guitars are sold in over 100 countries around the world.

Young H. Park now has his son Jun Park involved at the company to help to steer them into the future.

What Do I Think of Cort Guitars?

My earliest memories of Cort are quite vague. I remember seeing them in guitar shops and guitar magazines back in the nineties.

I’d never played one though until 2019, when I visited the Cort stand at a guitar show here in the UK. It was a lefty Cort MBC-1, a precursor to the META series Manson Guitar Works collaborations.

I remember liking the feel of it and enjoyed playing it, though I didn’t get a chance to plug it in.

Cort has built a strong reputation for making high-quality, affordable guitars, which is always a winner in my book.

Final Thoughts

At the time of writing, two left handed Cort electric guitars, six left handed Cort acoustic guitars, and one left handed Cort bass are available.

Not a bad selection of instruments, especially if you’re an acoustic player.

It’d be nice to have more electric instruments though. Just two electric guitars and one bass are available to lefties; not a huge number, especially considering how many are available in right handed configuration (111 acoustics, 33 electrics, and 28 basses at the time of writing).

That’s just how it is with most guitar companies though; let’s hope they can follow in the footsteps of companies like ESP, Schecter, Martin, and Taylor, who offer huge ranges of lefty guitars!
