Schecter has become a world-renowned guitar company, with many well-known and well-respected musicians and bands using them, including Avenged Sevenfold, Disturbed, GWAR, Ministry, and Hollywood Undead.

Who is Schecter Guitar Research?
Similar to companies like Charvel/Jackson, ESP, and Manson Guitar Works, Schecter Guitar Research began as a guitar repair shop.
Founded by David Schecter in 1976 in Van Nuys, California, they made high-quality replacement guitar necks, bodies, and various other guitar parts such as bridges, potentiometers, pickup assemblies, etc., allowing customers to soup-up their guitars.
After supplying parts to notable guitar companies, by 1979, Schecter offered their own high-quality, fully assembled hot-rodded electric guitars in very limited quantities.
By 1983, demand for Schecter’s high-quality instruments was too high for their custom shop to keep up, so the company moved to Dallas, Texas, after it was sold to a group of Texas investors looking to build on Schecter’s growing reputation.
Schecter then introduced a number of new guitars and basses, including what was later known as the Saturn, a T-style guitar, unofficially dubbed the “Pete Townshend model”, which he never actually endorsed. Schecter also introduced an S-style guitar at this point, which was later known as the Mercury.
For these models, Schecter made use of Fender Telecaster and Stratocaster necks, which they used during the repair shop days, and by 1985, Fender owners, CBS, took legal action against Schecter, as well as Tokai, and ESP seeking injunctions to stop the alleged copying of their guitars.
Swedish guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen began endorsing Schecter guitars at this time, with several of his custom models featuring scalloped necks and reverse headstocks.
The company was sold in 1987 to current owner Hisatake Shibuya, a Japanese businessman who was also the founder of ESP Guitars, who moved the company back to California, returning to its roots of making high-end, expensive custom instruments.
By 1996, Michael Ciravolo, who worked at Sunset Custom Guitars (a retail store owned by Shibuya), was promoted to president of Schecter Guitar Research. As he was a well-connected musician, he was able to add numerous well-known guitarists and bassists to Schecter’s artist roster, including Robert DeLeo (Bass – Stone Temple Pilots), and Jay Noel Yuenger and Sean Yseult (guitarist and bassist of White Zombie, respectively).
He also steered Schecter away from the traditional Fender type of guitars, instead, moving towards designs that catered to the next generation of musicians, playing more modern music styles.
In order to do this, Ciravolo moved the company into mass production, while keeping build quality high. He sourced a factory in South Korea to build their instruments, which would then be sent to the US to be set up by Schecter.
Schecter’s custom shop was expanded in 2012, followed by the announcement of a new line of USA-built guitars, taking the company back to its roots. As well as this “USA Production Series”, Schecter announced that they would enter the amplification market with amplifier designer James Brown on board. Brown had helped Eddie Van Halen design his famed Peavey 5150 amp.
Schecter’s amplifier range was split into two series: the USA series (built in Schecter’s USA custom shop) and the Stage series, which were built overseas.
These days, Schecter offers a huge range of guitars and basses, geared towards today’s modern players who require great performance from their instruments, and even though Schecter’s lefty range is just a fraction of this number, we still get a massive choice compared to other guitar companies’ offerings.
What Do I Think of Schecter Guitars?
I’m a big fan of the fact that Schecter has such a large range of cool-looking and well-specced lefty models, making them one of my favorite guitar companies.
Couple that with guitar players and bands that I like also using Schecter guitars, including Al Jourgensen (Ministry), Dean Pleasants (Suicidal Tendencies), Derek Smalls (Spinal Tap), Synyster Gates (Avenged Sevenfold), Travis Johnson (In This Moment), and Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society, Ozzy Osbourne).

Final Thoughts
When it comes to left handed basses, Schecter seems to be one of the most generous guitar companies out there. At the time of writing, there’s a huge collection of 43 lefty bass guitars!
If you play guitar, there is a massive range left handed Schecter guitars too.
Only Gibson, Fender, and ESP come close, and even they aren’t all that close.
