Want to know what left handed Spector bass guitars are available?

At the time of writing, the Spector Bass website is a little sketchy when it comes to information regarding exactly which models are available to buy in a lefty configuration, so I thought I’d try and make it a little easier for any left handed bassists out there wanting to buy one of these fantastic instruments.

Spector basses are highly regarded for their versatility and their modern sound and feel, making them perfect for many different styles of music.

Some well-known bassists who use Spector basses include Skyler Acord (Twenty One Pilots), Mike Kroeger (Nickelback), Mark Kelley (The Roots), Ian Hill (Judas Priest), and John Moyer (Disturbed).

Who Is Spector Bass?

Spector Guitars began in Brooklyn, New York in 1976 by founders Stuart Spector and Alan Charney, who were members of the Brooklyn Woodworkers Co-op, whose building was where Spector Bass was initially based.

They quickly gained a good word-of-mouth reputation with their first instruments, and using a “form follows function” philosophy to design, the first NS-1 bass was unveiled in March 1977. Two years later, a two-pickup model was released; the NS-2.

It was this model that was to propel Spector to worldwide attention when Sting played a white NS-2 on his band The Police‘s Synchronicity tour in 1983.

By late 1985, the Spector brand was sold to Kramer Guitars, and production was moved to their new factory in Neptune, New Jersey. Stuart and Alan were taken on as supervisors and consultants, and Kramer ramped up production to around a hundred guitars per month.

Kramer also started production of the NS-2 in Korea, allowing them to be made and sold at a lower price point, enabling Spector to enter the mass market.

The Euro line of Spector basses began production in then Czechoslovakia (now split into Slovakia and the Czech Republic) in 1987. These basses are still made there and sold worldwide.

Unfortunately, Kramer was forced into bankruptcy in 1990, ceasing all production of Spector instruments.

After a two-year hiatus, Stuart Spector’s new company, Stuart Spector Designs Ltd., was formed near Woodstock, New York. With this company, and new business partner, PJ Rubal, the company grew in size, sales, and artist roster.

A few years later, Stuart bought back the rights to the Spector trademark and continued to produce basses in their original format.

KORG, USA took over distribution in the USA and Canada in 2015, and later bought Spector Bass in 2019. The company continues to trade under the name Spector Musical Instruments, with headquarters in Long Island, New York.

What Do I Think of Spector Bass?

I’m a relatively new admirer of Spector basses. I didn’t really check Spector out until around 2019 after I found out that Bryan Beller (The Aristocrats, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Dethklok) sometimes played Spector basses. Being a fan of The Aristocrats, I thought I’d have a look at what Spector had to offer.

They’re really versatile basses and sound really cool to my ears, and I love the curvy ergonomic shape of the NS designs, along with some lovely-looking finishes.

Next time I’m in the market for a new bass, Spector is definitely gonna be a consideration.

Different Types of Spector Bass

The various Spector bass guitars are manufactured across three countries; Korea, the Czech Republic, and the USA.

USA models are built to order by master craftsmen in the US, while the Euro series are built using the same woods and techniques in Czechia. The Legend and Performer Series are made in Korea and represent Spector’s most affordable basses.

Does Spector Bass Make Left Handed Basses?

Yes, Spector Bass does indeed make left handed bass guitars.

According to the Spector Bass website, the Legend 4 Classic and the Legend 5 Classic are both available to buy. You can also buy any Czech-made Spector bass on special order, however, there is a 10% upcharge to the list price.

Their lefty NS Neck-thru basses at the NY workshop can also be specially ordered with a 10% upcharge through Spector’s USA Shop contact form.

There are some fantastic Spector basses on offer, though it’s not totally clear exactly which are available in a left handed version. I’ve featured the lefty basses below according to the Spector website at the time of writing.

Final Thoughts

As you can see, Spector has a great range of bass guitars available for left handed players. Granted, you may have to specially order some of them, so there may be a longer wait than the Korean-made basses, but there’s definitely a good number to choose from.
