Does Sire Make Left Handed Guitars?

They sure do! Sire has embraced the left-handed community and compared to many other guitar companies, there’re quite a generous number of left handed Sire guitars and basses!

With an impressive lineup of 22 left-handed models in the Larry Carlton electric guitar series and a whopping 37 Marcus Miller bass guitars, they’re making sure lefty musicians have plenty of options.

Sire hasn’t just dipped their toes into the left-handed market; they’ve dived in headfirst!

I’ll take a look at Sire bass guitars in a forthcoming article…

Meanwhile, check out the left handed Sire guitars, or read on for more info.

Who Are Sire?

Left Handed Sire Guitars - Two Lefty Sire Larry Carlton S7 Vintage guitars; one in Vintage White and one in Mild Green

Sire is an instrument brand that’s been turning heads, and for good reason; they’ve rapidly gained a reputation for producing high-quality guitars and basses without breaking the bank.

The Sire brand was founded by Kyle Kim, owner of Korean guitar brand Dame Guitars. In fact, Sire’s guitars share a lot in common with some Dame models, such as their headstocks and bodies.

Kim started out by building himself a bass guitar, as it was difficult for him to find a suitable bass in South Korea in the mid-90s. He ended up selling this first bass and then proceeded to sell several more each time he made another one.

After some advice from a friend, he decided to create his own bass guitar brand.

So he looked for a guitar factory to build his instruments. Initially, he approached nearby factory Cort to build twenty basses for him, but unfortunately, they rejected his proposal. So he found another factory to build this initial small run of basses for his new company.

This company became Dame Guitars, which he still owns today. After around ten years, Dame became the top guitar manufacturer in Korea. They became very popular throughout Asia.

With this ability to build great quality instruments at a good price, Kim decided to expand and build instruments for the international market.

With initial difficulties in getting foreign distributors to buy his Dame brand, due to such low profit margins, Kim vowed to “kill every other guitar by quality and price”. With this mission, Sire Guitars was born.

Sire has cultivated partnerships with big names like Marcus Miller for bass guitars and Larry Carlton for electric guitars, and created instruments that aren’t just well-made, but also apply the combined knowledge and expertise of these experienced musical legends!

Sire’s Larry Carlton range of electric guitars has been designed to specifications based on Carlton’s own favorite instruments, which beautifully merge classic vibes with modern touches.

As a result, Sire has developed instruments known for their great-sounding tone as well as a combination of excellent craftsmanship and affordability, garnering many positive reviews, making them a popular choice among beginners as well as seasoned players.

What Do I Think of Sire?

There are several guitar companies known for quality instruments combined with reasonable pricing, such as Harley Benton, Squier, Revelation Guitars, Vintage Guitars, Cort, and Michael Kelly. It’s a very competitive market, but for me, Sire stands out from the bunch.

Like many of the other companies, Sire’s commitment to quality, combined with reasonable pricing, is pretty impressive. However, Sire seems to go one step further by providing features that you’d find on much more expensive guitars, such as rolled fingerboard edges, bone nuts, and roasted maple necks.

Even with these fancier appointments, Sire guitars are available for a very reasonable price.

Pros and Cons of Buying a Sire Guitar

As with any guitar, it helps to try before you buy, and a Sire guitar is no different. So I’d always recommend you seek any of these guitars out first. However, sometimes that isn’t possible, so it’s worth getting an idea of some pros and cons beforehand.

Pros:

  • Larry Carlton’s Input: Sire’s electric guitars are developed in collaboration with legendary guitarist Larry Carlton. He plays a variety of musical styles, including pop, rock, and jazz. With his knowledge and experience, this partnership promises guitars designed with professional insights and very high standards.
  • Versatility: Sire’s guitar range is versatile across many styles, with models suitable for jazz, blues, rock, and more. They are based on some classic guitars, meaning suitable options for almost any player.
  • Premium Features at an Affordable Price: Sire is known for making instruments that incorporate high-end features such as rolled fingerboard edges, bone nuts, roasted maple necks, high-quality hardware, and well-constructed bodies, all at price points that are accessible for both amateur and professional musicians.
  • Build Quality: The Larry Carlton guitars boast excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail. From the choice of woods to the finishing and setup, each guitar looks great and plays well too.
  • Comfort and Playability: These guitars are designed with player comfort in mind. Features like a comfortable neck profile and ergonomically contoured bodies ensure you can play with minimal fatigue.

Cons:

  • Brand Perception: Sire has gained plenty of respect, particularly with their bass guitars thanks to their Marcus Miller series. However, they’re a relatively new guitar company, so some players might prefer to stick with more established brands out of familiarity or brand loyalty.
  • More Expensive Lefty Models: The MSRP of the lefty models are $100 more than their right handed counterparts, though this is quite common among guitar companies, although not all of them. This may not necessarily translate to their actual retail prices, with many retailers selling them quite a bit below the MSRP.
  • Resale Value: As a newer and less iconic brand compared to giants like Fender or Gibson, Sire guitars might not hold their value as well in the used market.
  • Limited Availability: Sire guitars can be difficult to get hold of in the USA. So depending on your location, they might not be as readily available, limiting your ability to try before you buy. However, online stores such as Thomann and Andertons ship internationally, so it’s worth checking them out.

Considering their price, Sire Larry Carlton guitars offer a lot of value, making them an excellent option if you’re looking for quality and versatility.

Different Types of Sire Guitars

Sire’s electric guitar range is pretty diverse. They have several models that cater to guitarists with a variety of musical tastes. So, whether you’re into jazz, rock, or anything in between, Sire’s got your back.

At present, Sire’s lefty range is, for the most part, inspired by classic guitars from Fender and Gibson, as you’ll see below.

Please note: Where lefty guitar or bass images haven’t been provided on the official website, I’ve flipped the right handed image to show what the left handed version might look like.

The electric guitar lineup for lefties is a bit of a treat. Thanks to their collaboration with Larry Carlton, and being based on some of his favorite guitars, Sire’s guitars provide a blend of classic and modern tones, suitable for various music genres.

With 22 different models, left-handed guitarists have a decent variety to choose from, each offering a unique playing experience.

I’ve included the new 2024 models at the top of the list in ascending price order.

Left Handed Sire Acoustic Guitars

Sire’s acoustic range is nowhere near as extensive as their range of electric guitars or basses, so unfortunately, at the time of writing this article, there are no left handed Sire acoustic guitars in production.

Final Thoughts

Sire’s commitment to left-handed musicians is genuinely cool; they’re not just throwing a couple of models out there like so many other guitar companies. Sire has 22! That’s huge!

With quite a comprehensive range of electric guitars, Sire is making sure we left-handed players have a great choice. Thanks to their collaboration with Larry Carlton, these lefty guitars are not just well-crafted; they’re approved by one of the best in the business.

With some features usually reserved for much more expensive guitars, such as rolled fingerboard edges and bone nuts, Sire’s left-handed instruments are definitely worth a look. They’re great quality, comfortable, and won’t leave your wallet feeling too light.

Whether you’re a beginner or a professional, Sire’s left-handed instruments are worth considering for their sound quality, playability, and affordability.
