Who Are Sheeran Guitars?
If you hadn’t already guessed, Sheeran Guitars are a unique range of guitars developed for singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. They were designed in close collaboration with George Lowden, the founder of Lowden Guitars, a company that has long been celebrated for its superior craftsmanship, premium materials, and high-quality acoustics. Lowden guitars are renowned for providing exceptional tonal quality, making them a favorite among pro musicians.
The connection between Ed Sheeran and Lowden began when Sheeran received a Lowden guitar from his friend Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol.
The instrument, which Sheeran used to write five tracks for his chart-topping album “X”, quickly became an essential part of his musical journey. Lightbody, recognizing how much Sheeran appreciated the guitar, approached George Lowden with the idea of creating a custom model for Sheeran as a gift, resulting in a unique, smaller-sized guitar, tailored to Sheeran’s needs and playing style.
This model later became known as the Wee Lowden, a compact, yet resonant instrument that would go on to inspire a new generation of acoustic guitarists.
As Sheeran’s relationship with George Lowden deepened, they shared a common vision of making high-quality guitars accessible to aspiring musicians, particularly those who might not be able to afford the premium price tags of Lowden’s traditional models.
Together, they collaborated on a new line of guitars that would maintain the outstanding craftsmanship of Lowden but be offered at a more affordable price.
This collaboration ultimately gave birth to Sheeran by Lowden Guitars, which reflected the quality and innovation of Lowden Guitars, and also embodied Sheeran’s own musical journey and his commitment to encouraging young, aspiring musicians.
What Do I Think of Sheeran Guitars?
While I haven’t had the chance to play a Sheeran by Lowden guitar myself, the positive reviews and feedback from fellow musicians speak volumes.
The Sheeran Guitar Tour Edition has been highly praised for its versatility, sound quality, and comfortable playability. It’s built for musicians on the move, offering a sturdy and portable design. The fact that it’s available as a left-handed model is a huge plus, providing lefty players with access to a well-crafted, highly functional guitar that suits a variety of musical styles.
While I’m not personally a fan of Ed Sheeran’s music, there’s no denying the solid reputation his guitars have earned, and I am partial to the use of a looper pedal. Sheeran by Lowden guitars have become known for being well-balanced performers, despite their smaller size.
Pros and Cons of Buying a Sheeran Guitar
Pros:
- Portability: The Tour Edition is compact and lightweight, making it an ideal guitar for musicians who perform regularly or travel often.
- Build Quality: Exceptional craftsmanship is evident, with high-quality materials and a smooth satin finish enhancing aesthetics and playability.
- Quality Sound: Despite its smaller body, the Sheeran Guitar offers impressive tone with clear, resonant acoustics.
- Left-Handed Option: The availability of a left-handed model ensures that left-handed guitarists aren’t left out, giving them access to the same great features as right-handed players.
- Affordability: Compared to other guitars from Lowden, the Sheeran Guitar is relatively affordable, providing a high-quality instrument at a more accessible price point.
Cons:
- Single Model Availability: Currently, the lefty Sheeran Guitar line consists only of the Tour Edition, which may limit options for players looking for a wider range of styles or features.
- Size Limitations: Its compact dimensions may not suit players accustomed to full-sized guitars or those seeking a deeper tonal range.
- Minimalistic Features: The absence of ornate decorations or extensive branding might not appeal to guitarists wanting a more personalized or visually distinctive instrument.
Different Types of Sheeran Guitars
There are several Sheeran by Lowden guitar models available across two series:
- W-Series – Ed collaborated with George to design the W-Series, inspired by Ed’s first custom Lowden, now known as the Wee Lowden. Its compact construction makes it perfect for both beginners and professionals, and it offers a variety of tonewoods and most models feature onboard LR Baggs electronics.
- S-Series – Provides a fuller sound to the W-Series, featuring a 24 4⁄5″ scale length, optional cutaway for better fret access, a variety of tonewood combinations, and high-quality LR Baggs electronics.
