36 Left Handed Acoustic Bass Guitars – Perfect For Chilled Out Jam Sessions

After receiving a couple of comments on my Ibanez TOD10N Review and Left Handed Ovation Guitars posts regarding left handed acoustic bass guitars, I thought I’d write a post about which lefty models are available.

Unfortunately, acoustic bass guitars are quite a small niche, even for right handers. Even more scarce, though, are Left handed acoustic bass guitars!

Compared with lefty acoustic guitars, the options for lefty acoustic basses are… sparse. That’s exactly why I’m writing this page right now; a single place where lefty players can check what’s out there.

I’ll keep a running list of models in the section below and update it as new ones appear or old ones disappear.

I know there are lefty acoustic basses from brands such as Martin, Takamine, Taylor, Ortega, and Warwick, among others. Some will crop up in limited batches, special orders, or short production runs, so do check back and please shout if I’ve missed one.

Why Play Acoustic Bass?

• Songwriting & practice: Instant pick-up-and-play without plugging in. Great for couch jams and late-night noodling.
• Unplugged sessions: Ideal for coffee-house sets, acoustic duos, or rehearsal spaces where amps aren’t welcome.
• Different flavour: The woody, percussive thump you can’t quite fake with an electric plus EQ.

A quick reality check: they’re not that loud unplugged. In a group with strummers and a cajón, you probably will still want to run through a small amp or PA. That’s normal for acoustic basses.

What to Look For (Lefty-Specific Buyer’s Guide)

Body size & comfort:
Bigger bodies move air (more unplugged volume) but can be unwieldy. Try seated and standing with a strap.

Electronics:
Most acoustic basses are giggable thanks to onboard preamps and piezo pickups. Look for a notch filter or phase switch to fight feedback.

Cutaway:
Handy if you play higher up the neck; otherwise, not essential.

Strings:

• Phosphor bronze = bright, articulate, more finger noise.
• Tapewounds / flats = warmer, thuddier, and friendlier on tops and fingertips.
  Swapping strings can transform the instrument.

Set up matters (especially for lefties):
Get a proper setup: nut slots, saddle height, truss relief, and intonation. A good setup is the difference between “Meh…” and “Yeh!”.

Do not flip a right-handed acoustic bass.
Unlike some electrics, the bracing, saddle compensation, and often the cutaway are right-hand-specific. Flipping usually wrecks intonation and tone – and can stress the top. Buy a purpose-built lefty.

Live Use, Feedback & Small-Rig Tips

• Use a soundhole plug if feedback is a nuisance.
• High-pass filtering (around 40–60 Hz) cleans up the boom on stage.
• A small acoustic amp or DI with EQ/notch into the PA is your friend.
• If you percuss on the top, consider tapewounds to reduce clack through the piezo.

Strings & Setup: Quick Wins

• Try tapewounds for that upright-adjacent thump and less squeak.
• If action feels high near the nut, get the nut slots cut properly – huge playability gain.
• A medium scale strung with tapes is a brilliant “all-day comfy” lefty choice for many players.

Availability
